This site is intended to facilitate the free exchange of data between groups studying neuronal morphology. All comments and suggestions would be very welcome - rcc1@soton.ac.uk A description of the archive is to appear in the Journal of Neuroscience Methods (in press). The archive is separate from the contributed data it contains: if you use cells from the archive in a publication please refer to the contributor's original publication of that data. References are included with each cell.
New - September 22nd 98 Version 1.2 of the cell editor cvapp.
- Java source code now available under the GNU General Public License.
- Includes a first pass at writing hierarchical Genesis .p files.
March 26th 1988: The cell viewing and editing software runs as an applet for java1.1 enabled browsers.There are three components to the archive:
- the current list of cells themselves in various formats, including pictures. This section is updated automatically after each submission to make pictures of the cells, index them and tabulate the available data.
- a
morphology viewer/editor written in java for converting between file formats and and headers and to validate contributed cells. It can be used to check that all the branches are connected and to correct any such deficiencies before submission. Because it is written in java it should run easily on almost any platform - see the download page for details.
- an ftp server for the submission of data. Contributors should contact rcc1@soton.ac.uk for details. Note that, as an alternative, the viewer can handle this automatically.

Usage instrictions are included with the viewer. Briefly, its main features are:
- Reading files in its own (swc) or neurolucida format, locally or from a web site.
- saving structures for use in the neuron or genesis modelling packages.
- Tracing branches out from any given point to check connections
- checking for loops
- Adding, removing, joining points
- Shifting whole branches
- Four viewing styles:
(not all of these allow all the editing functions)
- Skeleton
- Filled cylinders
- Skeleton in red-green stereo
- Areas in red-green stereo
- Three mouse driven panning-zooming-rotating methods
- Section labelling - soma, axon, dendrites.
- Header creation for contributor, published reference, contact details, further info etc.
- Shrinkage correction
